The UKRCC supports Lily and Mulan

Postby Ragdoll Welfare » Wed Nov 11, 2009 3:37 pm

Lily and Mulan were rehomed over the summer. They came to the attention of the UKRCC when their original owner asked for help in finding a new home for them. When the UKRCC rehomes any Ragdoll, it is their policy to find out everything they can about the cats and to be open and honest with potential adopters. However in the case of Lily and Mulan, the owner was very vague when giving details about these girls and we had very limited information about them. All we knew is that they were mother and daughter, both were over 10 years old and had not seen a vet for a very long time.
The UKRCC always advises all adopters to take out pet insurance on the day of adoption. Many pet insurance companies are excellent when offering cover to rescue cats and will happily offer insurance to cats even when the history is not well known. However adopters often chose not to invest in insurance and this was the case with Lily and Mulan. The girls went off to their new home, but without the security of insurance cover. At a health check, shortly after adoption, it was revealed, in additon to vaccinations, that both cats required extensive dental work and that Lily needed treatment for an over active thyroid, which would involve surgery to remove the gland. This surgery would have been covered under an insurance policy. The estimated cost for the veterinary care needed was around £600, of course a shock to the new owners. They contacted the UKRCC expressing concern at the health of the Ragdolls. The UKRCC gave the adopters the option to return the cats to the charity's care and a foster home was put in place, if needed. However the owners decided to keep Lily and Mulan, but asked that the UKRCC help fund the treatment the girls needed. The UKRCC then liaised closely with the vet caring for the girls and agreed to contribute to the treatment they needed.
In September both Lily and Mulan had full vaccination courses and dentals, whereby they had the majority of their teeth removed. In addition Lily had surgery to remove her thyroid gland. Despite the difficulties the UKRCC faced over the summer, to honour their commitment to Lily and Mulan, the decision was made to fund all this treatment. The charity paid out over £800 in vet fees, the total cost of all the treatment and the vaccination course and at a time when donations to the charity are virtually non existent.

The UKRCC wish Lily and Mulan happiness in their new home and sincerely hope that the procedures they have had will make a difference to their lives and give them the opportunity to live out their twilight years, with dignity and in comfort.

The UKRCC is still very much funding the care of Ragdoll cats, including, Dexter, Socs and Delphi. If you would like to help us help them, then please consider making a donation to charity funds. Your support will be very much appreciated.
